A number of the Rejuva Center’s patients are surprised to learn there are as many options for nonsurgical facial rejuvenation as there are for facial plastic surgery.
Take, for one, the chemical peel. Similar to laser skin resurfacing procedures, a chemical peel treatment is designed to slough off the top of layer of skin so fresh healthy skin becomes the outermost layer of the epidermis.
Because each patient has different needs, the solution used can be tailored for the desired results. The mixture can also be used as a full face treatment or to promote the exfoliation of certain areas of the face.
Customization
There are different strengths associated with the ingredients found in chemical peel solution.
Peels are categorized as superficial, medium or deep according to the layers of skin the ingredients reach and interact with.
Superficial chemical peels, or a light peel, medium and deeper peels contain trichloracetic acid (TCA) at different strengths. Deep peels typically are the most intensely acidic and will therefore offer maximum benefit.
Superficial Chemical Peels
Light peels typically contain a lesser percentage oftrichloracetic acid. They can help combat acne and any associated scarring, as well as other issues that plague oily skin such as blackheads and oversized pores.
Medium Chemical Peels
In contrast to less potent acids found in the superficial peels noted above, trichloracetic acid treats deeper layers of skin.TCA chemical peels lessen undesirable characteristics of oily skin and advanced signs of aging — including brown spots and wrinkles. Patients with dark skin may find that their skin is best suited for a medium strength chemical peel in order to avoid keloid scars and pigmentation issues.
Deep Chemical Peels
The most potent form of chemical peel is a higher strength TCA. The ingredients penetrate the skin deeply, reaching the collagen to form stronger underlying structures. This peel is very effective with wrinkling and hyperpigmentation. Deeper peels should not be done on skin of color as they can sometimes cause hyperpigmentation.
Chemical peels can treat the entire face, or just select areas like the eyes and mouth. In fact, we often apply a peel after a blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery) for further tightening of the skin on the lower lids.
A chemical peel is a highly individual process. The goal of any peel is to harmonize the appearance of the skin. To achieve that goal the Rejuva Center takes a highly individualized approach.
With the wide range of choices to suit specific needs, the Rejuva Center, under the medical direction of Dr. Edwin F. Williams, can help you to achieve the younger, smoother facial appearance you want. Discuss this and other options and procedures with the doctors and staff of the Rejuva Center.
