How to Prevent Loss of Skin Volume
Although people with a genetic predisposition to lose skin volume may not be able to prevent it entirely, especially as they age, they can take clear steps to minimize the effects of skin volume loss and maintain the health of their skin throughout their lifetimes. First, and perhaps most importantly, everyone needs to use proper protection when exposed to the sun. This means wearing a broad-spectrum UVA/UVB sunscreen daily, wearing protective clothing, and staying in the shade when possible.
Other lifestyle factors also matter. For example, a healthy diet is essential for maintaining a healthy weight, and a healthy weight reduces the risk of needing to lose a lot of weight, which would ultimately impact skin volume as large volumes of fat disappear from the body. Additionally, healthy diets rich in antioxidants and Omega-3 fatty acids can also encourage collagen production.
Daily skincare also matters. At a minimum, a healthy skincare routine should include gentle cleansing, exfoliating, moisturizing, and using products that contain ingredients like retinoids, vitamin C, hyaluronic acid, and peptides, which can help promote collagen production and maintain skin elasticity.
