Sagging Skin

Sagging skin refers to the loss of elasticity and firmness in the skin, resulting in a droopy or loose appearance. This condition commonly occurs due to aging, but it can also be influenced by other factors. Sagging skin can make individuals look older than they are, leading to concerns about their appearance and self-confidence. In addition, sagging skin, particularly around the abdomen, arms, and thighs, can affect the fit of clothing and make individuals feel self-conscious about their physical appearance, especially when wearing outfits that expose those parts of the body.

What Causes Sagging Skin?

The most common reason for sagging skin is unavoidable and inevitable: aging. As our bodies age, we struggle to produce two important proteins: collagen and elastin. These proteins give the skin firmness and structure, so as their levels reduce in the body so does the firmness and structure of the skin. This generally happens throughout the body.

In addition, other lifestyle-related factors can exacerbate the impacts of time. Specifically, UV exposure and pollutants in the environment, including cigarette smoke, can further deteriorate collagen and elastin levels. Finally, extreme weight loss of 100 pounds or more, especially if it is rapid weight loss, can also lead to sagging skin since the body cannot keep up with its production of collagen and elastin during these times.

How to Prevent Sagging Skin

While there are some causes of sagging skin, such as age, that are unavoidable, and others, such as weight loss, that are advisable, we can make many simple lifestyle choices to help prevent or reduce sagging skin. This includes following a healthy diet that is full of whole foods that promote skin health. Exercise is also important, especially for those on a weight loss journey, as building muscle can help encourage the production of collagen and keep the skin smooth and tight.

Many basic daily skincare best practices also help to reduce the development of sagging skin. This includes a healthy skincare routine that includes products designed to increase skin elasticity and collagen production. In addition, take care to avoid the sun and wear a broad-spectrum UVA/UVB sunblock daily to help prevent sun damage.
