Redness and Rosacea

Redness refers to the reddening of the skin, often due to dilation of blood vessels. It can occur due to various reasons, including inflammation, irritation, or increased blood flow to the skin. Chronic redness, however, may actually be rosacea, a chronic skin condition characterized by redness, visible blood vessels, and sometimes small, red, pus-filled bumps on the face. It typically affects the central part of the face, such as the cheeks, nose, forehead, and chin.

Facial redness and rosacea can cause concern to those who suffer from it because the physical symptoms affect the appearance, causing self-consciousness. Additionally, rosacea, particularly near the eyes, can lead to more serious medical conditions if left untreated.

What Causes Redness and Rosacea?

Although the true causes of redness and rosacea are unknown, possibly with genetic components, specific environmental triggers can cause someone with rosacea to have an outbreak. This includes environmental triggers like sun and wind exposure and extreme hot and cold temperatures. Lifestyle factors can also cause a rosacea flare, particularly diet-related factors such as spicy foods, alcohol, and hot drinks.

Folks with rosacea also tend to have sensitive skin, which means harsh skincare products and those with fragrances can also trigger or exacerbate flare-ups. Stress is another known trigger, so finding ways to manage stress may help improve rosacea over time.

How to Prevent Redness and Rosacea

Although someone who is genetically predisposed to rosacea may never be able to prevent it, it’s possible to reduce the number of flare-ups. Specifically, once you understand which of the triggers cause rosacea for you, it is important to avoid those triggers. This includes protecting your skin and avoiding the sun or any extreme weather, noting dietary triggers and not eating problem foods, as well as managing stress through self-care and lifestyle changes.

In addition, taking care of your skin is also important. In fact, some skincare products, including many medical-grade options, can even work to reduce redness and shorten the duration of rosacea flare-ups. Work with your medical skincare team to determine which products are best suited to your unique skincare and rosacea needs and be sure to use these products daily to maintain skin health.
