Spider Veins and Broken Capillaries

Spider veins and broken capillaries are both types of visible blood vessels near the surface of the skin. These types of veins are often considered to be cosmetic concerns, although they can indicate underlying health issues in some cases.

Spider veins are small, dilated blood vessels that appear close to the surface of the skin. They typically resemble spider webs or tree branches and are often red, blue, or purple in color, often appearing on the legs, thighs, ankles, and face. However, they may also appear on the chest or other parts of the body.

Broken capillaries, also known as telangiectasia, are tiny blood vessels that have widened and become visible beneath the skin. They often appear as red or purple lines or blotches. Broken capillaries are frequently found on the face, particularly around the nose, cheeks, and chin, but they can also occur on the legs.

What Causes Spider Veins and Broken Capillaries?

Both spider veins and broken capillaries can be caused by various factors, including genetics, aging, hormonal changes, prolonged standing or sitting, skin trauma, obesity, alcohol consumption, and sun exposure. However, some of these factors are more common than others, including the following:

  • Genetics: A family history of spider veins or broken capillaries increases the likelihood of developing them.
  • Aging: As people age, the skin and blood vessels lose elasticity and become more prone to damage, increasing the risk of spider veins and broken capillaries.
  • Hormonal changes: Fluctuations in hormone levels, such as those occurring during puberty, pregnancy, menopause, and from hormonal medications, can contribute to the development of spider veins and broken capillaries.

Notably, it’s often a combination of many factors, rather than a single cause, that leads to the development of spider veins and broken capillaries. Additionally, individual susceptibility varies, and some people may be more prone to these conditions than others.

How to Prevent Spider Veins and Broken Capillaries

Because of their genetic components, it’s not always possible to completely prevent spider veins and broken capillaries from occurring. However, you can take several steps to reduce the likelihood of these veins developing or worsening. Specifically, make sure to protect your skin from the sun, as sun damage can make spider veins and broken capillaries worse. Be sure to limit sun exposure, wear sunscreen with a high SPF, and protect your skin with clothing and hats to prevent sun damage that could weaken blood vessel walls.

In general, make sure you also practice proper skincare. Be gentle with your skin, especially on the face. Avoid harsh scrubbing or rubbing, which can damage blood vessels, and use gentle skincare products and those that strengthen capillary walls rather than those that irritate the skin.
