    This pre-op picture was taken in May 2009 prior to Radiesse 1 vial that was put into the folds around this patients mouth. The after picture was taken in April 2011 after having the same folds treated with another vial of Radiesse. Radiesse is FDA approved to last for 2 years. It is believed that it can last longer, deeper within the tissue which after having multiple treatments one after sees more improvement in their lines.

    This is a 67 year old woman who was concerned with the lines around her mouth, especially those on her upper lip. The upper lip lines responded well to the CO2 Laser treatment. It is important to note that fold lines from the edge of the nose to the corner of the mouth and those from the corner of the mouth to the chin are very difficult lines to correct. The recommended treatment for these lines are fillers such as Collagen, Restylane or Radiesse (Radiance). The post operative pictures shown were taken 2 years after her procedure. The patient is very pleased with her results.

Comparing Different Types of Fillers

There are many different fillers on the market each with unique qualities. With the array of options, it is beneficial to find the perfect filler for each patient to help achieve their desired results.

Juvéderm®

Juvéderm® fillers contain a modified version of Hyaluronic Acid, a substance found naturally in the body which contributes to hydration and volume. This family of dermal fillers are utilized to add volume to different areas of the face and smooth facial lines. Depending on the individual filler used, they can address concerns from the top of the forehead down to the chin, neckline, and jowls.

Popular Juvéderm® injection sites in the lower face include marionette lines, lips, cheeks, and jowls.

Restylane®

Restylane® fillers are hyaluronic acid-based fillers that are also used to restore facial volume and smooth lines in the skin. This family of fillers utilize XpresHAn technology, which allows the filler to move naturally with facial expression. In the lower face, Restylane® injections are commonly used in the jawline, the chin, around laugh lines, and in the lips.

Radiesse®

Radiesse® is an injectable filler with gel consistency that contains Calcium Hydroxylapitie (CaHA), a substance that stimulates the body’s natural production of elastin and collagen. This allows for Radiesse® to fill in lines and add volume immediately upon injection due to its gel like nature, and as it breaks down exposing the CaHA beads the body will create collagen and elastin to improve skin quality, elasticity and texture.

In the lower face, this filler is often used for treatment of nasolabial folds, to support the corners of the mouth, and smooth marionette lines.

What is Sculptra®

Sculptra® is an injectable filler that contains poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA), a compound that is both biocompatible (safe) and biodegradable (dissolves in your body). It is used to stimulate natural collagen production in deeper layers of the skin that have been lost with aging. This works to add structure and volume back to the face, and to plump areas of wrinkles and skin folds to create a more youthful appearance.

As a result of this process, the effects of Sculptra® appear gradually and last longer. As a lower face filler, Sculptra® can be used to address areas prone to facial volume loss, including the cheeks, nasolabial folds, marionette lines, and chin.

Do Fillers Age You?

Dermal fillers are used with the goal of reversing signs of aging. However, like any medical procedure, there are always risks which increase if the injections are not done appropriately. For example, if filler is overused or placed incorrectly it can create an unnatural result that ultimately ages the face.

This is why it is important to have your fillers done by a licensed medical professional.

What are the Newest Facial Fillers?

Doctors and scientists continue to develop new formulas to help patients combat the signs of aging in as many ways as possible. In December 2021 for example, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved a new formula called RHA Redensity to tackle fine lines around the mouth.

Prior to that, the newest fillers to enter the market included Juvéderm® Volbella and Radiesse (+).
