    Jake is an 11 year-old who was initially seen at the Albany Medical Vascular Birthmark Clinic by Dr. Williams with an expanding left cheek Hemangioma. The Hemangioma did not resolve by the time he was of school age and he was beginning to develop a negative self-image and become the source of some ridicule. He underwent excision of this as an outpatient and treatment with the pulse dye laser and we can see a very nice result from this minor surgical procedure.

    Daniel is a ten-year old who was initially seen shortly after birth with an expanded Hemangioma on the left middle eyelid area. This was aggressively treated with the pulse dye laser and, as you can see, he has had a nice response saving him from much of the teasing and ridicule that can occur when these do not spontaneously resolve on their own. He was kind enough to let us use his photographs to help other children.

    This is a patient who presented initially in the Vascular Birthmark Clinic over ten years ago. She had a massive lower lip Hemangioma that was bleeding and ulcerated and causing problems with feeding. We initially treated this aggressively and eventually ended up performing a surgical repair of the lower lip. She returns most recently now at 14 years of age for some touch-up work on her lower lip. She has had a very nice improvement and she is extremely pleased with the overall progress.

    This is a young man who was born out of the country and traveled here for treatment in our Center. He grew up with a massive right facial vascular malformation which was not only disfiguring but painful. He received a great degree of ridicule and social isolation. He traveled here for surgical removal of this which was performed and he traveled back to his country of origin. He emailed us photographs approximately one year later and, as you can see, he has healed up nicely and has had a nice improvement from the surgical repair of his massive right facial vascular malformation.

    This is a delightful young woman who saw us initially when she was two years of age with a Hemangioma of the nasal tip area. This can be seen on her angle view especially on the left side with a full tip that gives the appearance of a Polly-beak. This was addressed with removal and she was kind enough to send us a photograph now that she is 14 years old and has followed up with the practice. Even though this was a fairly subtle issue for this patient, these issues can be significant when a child enters school and begins to be the recipient of ridicule. She appears very well adjusted.

    This was a 4 ½ year old who had a Hemangioma at birth that was on her right arm. This grew rapidly and ulcerated and she was at a point where she was starting to become ridiculed on the playground. The parents were looking for an opinion. A debulking resection procedure was performed with a multiple z-plasty repair. Here she can be seen in the post-operative photograph ready for laser therapy. The laser therapy will lighten up that areas of redness and flatten out the Hemangioma. As one can see, this was certainly a problem for her being very self-conscious and these are the type of Hemangiomas have been for many years somewhat neglected with the family being told “this will go away.” Fortunately with a relatively small procedure this can be addressed by a well-trained contemporary surgeon.
