What are Juvéderm Fillers Made Of?

At The Rejuva Center at Williams, we offer several types of fillers, including the FDA-cleared Juvéderm® family of fillers, which are hyaluronic acid-based.

Hyaluronic acid, also known as hyaluronan, is an ingredient used in a number of injectable fillers, because of its versatility and ability to treat a variety of issues.

Hyaluronic acid is a tiny molecule that is found in nearly every cell in the body, with the incredible ability to retain almost 1,000 times its weight in water.

The molecule plays a vital part in the systems of your body because it binds to water and forms a viscous gel that moisturizes and lubricates everything from your eyes to your joints to your skin.

In fact, approximately 50% of the hyaluronic acid in the body is found in your skin, working to keep it adequately hydrated and balanced.

When injected into the skin as a filler, hyaluronic acid softens and smooths and lines, fills in deep folds and wrinkles, and adds volume to areas where it has been lost.

This molecule does all of this using its own natural ability to keep the skin looking healthy and supple.

The Juvéderm Family of Fillers

Juvéderm® & Juvéderm® XC

The pioneering members of the Juvéderm® family of fillers are Juvéderm®, Juvéderm® XC, and SkinVive™ by Juvederm®.

The difference being that Juvéderm® XC contains lidocaine, whereas Juvéderm® does not. Lidocaine allows those sensitive to pain to maximize their comfort during their treatment.

These fillers are typically used to treat mild to moderate lines and wrinkles around the mouth and nasolabial area, as well as the glabella (between the eyebrows), earlobes, and philtrum (between the nose and upper lip). Juvéderm® can also be used to augment your lips.

Juvéderm Vollure®

Juvéderm Vollure® XC targets severe nasolabial folds, smile lines, and marionette lines, offering results that last up to 18 months.

Juvéderm Volbella® XC

Juvéderm Volbella® XC is used to soften and smooth perioral lines (also called “lipstick lines”) around the mouth, as well as for enhancing and augmenting your lips for up to a year.

Juvéderm Voluma® XC

Juvéderm Voluma® XC works to restore the contour, lift and volume to your cheeks and midface that has been lost due to the natural aging process. Because of the way it is formulated, Voluma can be injected a bit deeper for a better volume boost. Juvéderm Voluma® XC rejuvenates your appearance, leaving you with beautiful, natural-looking facial volume for up to two years.

Juvéderm® Ultra Plus XC

Ultra Plus XC is similar to Juvéderm® XC in that it is designed to treat the same areas, but is typically used for more moderate to severe wrinkles and folds. The primary difference between Juvéderm® XC and Ultra Plus XC is the molecule size – molecules in Ultra Plus are larger, allowing them to last up to a year and provide a bit more volume.

SkinVive™ by Juvederm®

SkinVive™ by Juvéderm® is the newest product from the Juvéderm® family of injectable fillers designed to improve the smoothness of the cheeks. As the first (and only!) hyaluronic acid (HA) microdroplet injectable approved by the FDA for aesthetic use, SkinVive™ works to improve the skin’s overall hydration while also increasing the smoothness of the cheeks. Unlike other HA fillers, SkinVive™ actually works to improve the skin’s overall quality by adding moisture from the inside out. This helps to improve the skin’s overall texture and add a healthy glow to your overall look for up to six months.

Because it is a microdroplet injection, recovery from SkinVive™ procedures carry a very low risk of side effects — the most common is mild bruising — and have a short recovery period that allows most patients to enjoy social events the same day of the procedure. SkinVive™ is a versatile injectable option that is best suited for patients looking for a more consistent radiant, hydrated look, especially in the cold winter months.

What To Know About Your Juvéderm Filler Treatment and Results

Each of our injectable filler treatments are performed in-office, and typically take under 30 minutes. The procedure is practically pain-free, as each filler contains lidocaine, an anesthetic, and additional numbing cream as needed.

Juvéderm® injections are minimally invasive and require minimal downtime — you can typically return to work or your other daily activities immediately without anyone knowing that you had a cosmetic treatment.

Patients will see their gorgeous Juvéderm® results immediately, and the results will continue to improve for one to two weeks.

The amount of Juvéderm® necessary to correct or enhance an area will be determined during your consultation with one of our Licensed Medical Providers, as it is dependent on the area being treated and the amount of correction required.

The results can last for a year or more, depending on which filler was used, and how quickly the body absorbs the filler.

As with any treatment, there may be side effects, which may appear at the site of the injection, including:

  • Hardness, lumps or bumps
  • Redness or skin discoloration
  • Bruising or swelling
  • Tenderness, pain or itching

If you experience any of the above issues, rest assured that they are mild and temporary. If a side effect is experienced, it is typically resolved on its own within a couple of weeks.
