TCA Chemical Peels

After years of sun exposure takes its toll on your face, you may be left with rough, dull skin and splotchy, uneven color and tone. There is a myriad of options available for treating skin that is showing symptoms of age and sun damage, but for best results, professional facial treatments are the best solution. The Rejuva Center at Williams offers several options to help restore your skin, giving you back that fresh, youthful glow. One such option is a chemical peel, a treatment designed to improve not only the appearance but the quality of the skin on your face and neck. Depending on the condition of your skin and the degree of damage, as well as your desired results, a chemical peel is an effective, minimally invasive way to immediately rejuvenate your skin.

What is a Chemical Peel?

Chemical peels work by removing the outer layers of damaged skin, revealing the fresh, healthy skin underneath. Despite the name, chemical peels are derived from acids found in milk, fruit and other naturally occurring acids. Peels are available in several strengths, including light, medium and deep peels. As you progress from a mild to deep chemical peel, a stronger acid is used in a higher concentration to penetrate deeper into your skin to treat more severe skin conditions.

Before undergoing a chemical peel, you will consult with one of our highly trained and experienced staff to make certain that this type of treatment is the best way to address your skin concerns and provide you with optimal results. While patients with darker skin may see favorable results from a chemical peel, patients with fair skin are generally better candidates for chemical peels, as there is less risk for pigmentation issues and uneven skin tone post-procedure. Additionally, patients with a history of scarring, recurring cold sores or skin sensitivities from certain medications may not be ideal candidates for a chemical peel. To help ensure safe and beautiful results, it is essential that discuss your medical history with us to determine if a chemical peel is the right treatment for you.

Chemical peels can address a variety of skin concerns, including:

  • Acne scars
  • Age spots
  • Aging skin
  • Crow's feet
  • Hyperpigmentation
  • Scars
  • Sun-damaged skin
  • Wrinkles

What to Expect From Your Chemical Peel

At The Rejuva Center at Williams, our TCA peels are administered in our fully accredited New England Laser and Cosmetic Surgery Center, and can take anywhere from ten minutes to an hour to complete. When you come in for your chemical peel, your face will be thoroughly cleansed to remove all of the oil, allowing the TCA solution to penetrate more evenly. The chemical peel is then applied to your face and you may experience a slight stinging sensation as the peel begins to work its magic.

The recovery after a TCA peel will depend upon the strength of the peel. Patients undergoing a 10% TCA peel can expect a recovery period of two to three days, while those undergoing a stronger 25% to 35% TCA peel may require one to two weeks of recovery. By the second or third day post-treatment, your skin will begin to flake and peel, which typically lasts between seven to fourteen days. This process is painless, and it is essential that you don’t peel any skin that does not come off easily, as this raises your risk for scarring. Once all of the treated skin has peeled off, your newly rejuvenated skin will be sensitive to the sun for at least two months, so it is recommended that you apply sunscreen and avoid sun exposure as much as possible.

The following side effects are normal and will resolve as you heal. If you have questions or concerns, contact us to make sure that you are caring for your skin correctly to encourage the healing process.

Other potential side effects include:

  • Redness
  • Mild discomfort
  • Swelling
  • Pink or red skin
  • Pigment changes

TCA Peel Results

You will begin to see the results of your TCA chemical peel treatment once the peeling is complete, and you will see continued improvements over the next 30 to 60 days. If several treatments are needed to achieve your desired results, one of our expert staff will work with you to create an individualized treatment plan that includes a schedule for future treatments. Results of TCA chemical peels can be lasting, depending on how deep the peel was and how well you care for your skin after your treatment. We also offer medical-grade skincare products, as well as complementary procedures to enhance and prolong your results.
