Microneedling

Age, sun damage, lifestyle and environmental factors wreak havoc on your face, leaving you with rough, uneven skin and a less-than-radiant appearance overall. While there are thousands of skin care options on the market that claim to be able to fix any skin woe, the primary reason behind your skin’s inability to bounce back from damage is the decrease in your body’s natural production of collagen and elastin that comes with age. At The Rejuva Center at Williams, we offer several treatments designed to address issues associated with aging skin, including microneedling, a minimally-invasive therapy specifically designed to increase your body’s production of collagen, leading to improvements in or elimination of fine lines and wrinkles, acne scars and hyperpigmentation. Our microneedling device of choice is the Bellus SkinPen, the first and only FDA-approved microneedling device available.

What is the Role of Collagen in Youthful Skin?

To understand how microneedling works, you first have to understand the role of collagen in keeping your skin looking gorgeous and smooth. Along with elastin, collagen is a vital building block for healthy, youthful skin, providing the underlying support for your skin and helping it to easily bounce back after damage. When you’re young, your skin contains plenty of collagen and therefore appears smooth, plump and healthy. As you get older, two things happen: collagen production slows, and the existing collagen fibers weaken and break down, affected by things like daily exposure to UV rays, pollution, free radicals and the natural aging process. This causes your skin to begin to sag and look crepey and uneven, allowing wrinkles and lines to more deeply etch themselves into your face. In order to maintain firm and healthy-looking skin, collagen production needs to be stimulated regularly to produce new, healthy collagen at a faster rate than it is being broken down. That’s where microneedling comes in.

What is Microneedling?

Microneedling works by gently piercing the dermis using a device equipped with tiny sterile needles. As the device travels across the surface of your skin, the needles oscillate in and out, delivering hundreds of evenly-spaced micro-punctures to your epidermis. These punctures are nearly invisible, but are enough to activate your body’s injury response, which stimulates healing and in turn boosts the production of new collagen and elastin. This increase in collagen and elastin not only helps to reverse visible signs of aging, but also helps to prevent further aging by triggering cell turnover.

Microneedling is a safe and effective treatment for all ages and skin types. No two microneedling treatment plans are exactly the same, and at The Rejuva Center at Williams, we use the Bellus SkinPen, which allows us to further tailor the treatment to your specific needs and skin concerns. Needle depth, speed, number of sessions and aftercare are all customized to address your specific skin type, condition and desired results. Younger patients can maintain their youthful appearance and/or improve the appearance of acne scars, enlarged pores and uneven skin tone, in addition to helping to keep monthly breakouts at bay. Older patients can address all of the same issues, as well as advanced signs of aging and maintenance of the results achieved by other cosmetic procedures.

Microneedling is also an effective treatment for other areas on the body. With the Bellus SkinPen, we can now treat pigmentation issues, stretch marks, scarring and skin laxity on your thighs, abdomen, breasts – nearly anywhere you may want to address.

What to Expect from Your Microneedling Treatment

Your Bellus SkinPen microneedling session begins with you getting comfortable in one of the spa-like treatment rooms at The Rejuva Center at Williams. A topical numbing cream is applied to your skin to maximize comfort, followed by the application of SkinPen’s Skinfuse® Lift HG hydrogel, which is used to protect your skin’s surface from friction and abrasion during the treatment. The SkinPen is moved gently and uniformly along your skin, creating hundreds – even thousands – of micropunctures per second, stimulating your skin’s natural healing process to activate collagen production and tissue remodeling. The SkinPen treatment takes about 30 minutes, and the result is a visible reduction in fine lines, wrinkles and scars and an increased firmness and refreshed “glow” to your skin.

Once your SkinPen session is complete, you are free to go about your day with few restrictions. You may experience some mild redness, but that will resolve on its own within a day or so. You should avoid strenuous exercise and sun exposure for at least 24 hours following your treatment, and no makeup or sunscreen should be worn during that time. You will receive specific aftercare instructions from the expert staff member performing your microneedling procedure. Anything about the application of stem cells and growth factors to enhance the treatment and heal aging.

Microneedling Results and Maintenance

After your SkinPen microneedling session, you will notice that your skin looks healthier and feels firmer. As the collagen works to rebuild healthy tissue, your results will continue to improve, with the increased collagen and elastin production continuing for up to six months. In most cases, more than one session is needed to provide optimal results, with most people requiring a minimum of three, spaced at least a month apart. To keep your skin looking firm and youthful, we recommend a regular schedule of SkinPen microneedling treatments.
