PRP (Platelet-Rich Plasma) Injections

Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is a cutting-edge therapy that has primarily been utilized in the fields of orthopedics and sports medicine to promote injury repair and healing. In recent years, it has also gained popularity as a cosmetic treatment used to boost collagen and eliminate fine lines and wrinkles, while further research has shown that PRP therapy is a promising option for hair restoration. This versatile therapy has the ability to stall the natural process of thinning hair as well as reactivating your existing hair follicles, leaving you with a fuller and thicker head of hair. While there are minimally invasive hair transplant options available, Williams Rejuva Center offers this exciting innovation in hair restoration that has the potential to restore your confidence along with your hair, all without surgery or downtime.

What is Platelet Rich Plasma?

Platelet-rich plasma therapy is an autologous treatment, meaning that it uses material from your own body – in this case, blood. About 55 percent of your blood volume is comprised of plasma, a clear, yellowish liquid that is approximately 90 percent water. Plasma performs several essential tasks – it assists your blood in moving smoothly through your body, while stabilizing your blood pressure and helping to transport vital proteins responsible for clotting and immune system support. Plasma also monitors and maintains balanced pH levels, keeping your cells functioning at optimal levels. Platelets are blood cells whose primary job is to activate the clotting mechanism after an injury. Most of the time, they float through your bloodstream in an inactive state, but once you sustain an injury, the damaged blood vessels signal the platelets to travel to the area. Once the platelets reach the site of the injury, they bind themselves to the damaged vessels, causing your blood to clot and stop the bleeding. PRP is created by taking some of your blood and running it through a centrifuge, which separates the platelets and plasma from the other cells found in your blood. This concentration of platelets and plasma contains growth factors that have been proven to not only stimulate new hair growth, but strengthen existing follicles.

How Does PRP Help with Hair Loss?

As a treatment for hair loss, research has found that PRP therapy can induce dormant hair follicles to move into an active growth phase. There are limits to PRP therapy: it is unable to restore hair where there is no follicle, and it has only been proven as an effective treatment for thinning hair due to male pattern baldness. PRP for hair restoration is recognized as a promising treatment for thinning hair in both men and women, but there is still research to be done. However, PRP therapy has been shown to be a minimally invasive, virtually painless option for hair restoration that requires zero downtime and offers effective results. Additionally, since PRP treatments utilize your own blood, there is no risk of allergic reactions, rejection or side effects that may occur when using other procedures. PRP can be performed as a standalone treatment, or as a complement to hair transplants or other nonsurgical hair restoration options.

What to Expect From Your PRP Treatment and Results

When you choose PRP therapy for hair restoration at Williams Rejuva Center, one of our Certified Nurse Specialists will begin by drawing a small amount of your blood. The blood is then placed in a closed centrifuge, which separates the platelet-rich plasma from the other cells in your blood. In the final step, the PRP serum is infused into the designated treatment area on your scalp using a microneedling device. After your PRP treatment, the only side effect you may experience is a mild sensation of warmth in the treatment area, similar to a sunburn. This is normal and will dissipate quickly. There is no downtime required, and you can return to your everyday activities (even swimming) immediately after your treatment. Because the effectiveness of PRP therapy relies on your body’s natural processes, your results aren’t immediately visible. You will see gradual changes in your hair as the growth factors in the PRP do their job, and in about two to six months, your hair will start to look thicker and healthier. Depending on your individual treatment plan and needs, you may need multiple PRP sessions to see noticeable, positive results.
